THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON TAINT

Mutatos:

Clenn Raqis (Jeff)
Janak (Alan)
Holgarr (Jim)
Flinnic (Terry)
William (Joe)
Morley (Darren)

Oxymorons (Mark)

We wait at the foot of the mountain of fire, at the great glass doors. But in the mean time we must deal with the wildlife. A bear attacks! It charges to the edge of our fire light and starts by spitting acid! Holgarr does a spring attack and it's not long before the bear is a heap of fur and inedible meat. Clenn Raqis will make a suit of armor should we have time, but we do not.

The "God's Tear" appears overhead and the door opens to the mountain. The team goes in, and when they do, they are hit by an overpowering wave of energy. Everyone instantly gains 15pts and has 15 minutes to spend said points, else the leftover points are "tainted powers" selected by the GM. But since when can't we spend XP? No danger here.

So the newly pumped up Mutates explore, while their players become concerned with the fact that 15 more XP means tougher monsters.

The entry hall features a low wall at the far end, and when someone gets into the area there, they can see there's no immediate roof (just darkness overhead). This area acts as a whack-a-mutant area because on the other side of the low (12ft) wall are some very large beings who are invisible and who swing over the wall doing the bashy-bashy all over anyone within reach. We also discover that there are pointy things on the ground in some areas that you just don't see. Later it would be discovered that they are invisible poisoned caltrops.

Clenn decides to open fire into the room from a safe distance; thing is, his aim sucks. So he takes out some of the roof causing a collapse. With a two-ton boulder in the way, Super-Strength Holgarr and the newly Super-Strengthened Morley begin to push the boulder forward. This acts to keep the invisible giants from swinging at us and also to put a hole in the far wall. (Note that we had no idea what was attacking us, it was just a happy circumstance that the size of the boulder kept them from being able to reach us). With a hole in the low wall, and the hallway now swept of caltrops by Holgarr the Janitor, Holgarr takes the lead and is again slammed. We retreat, and through the opening Clenn fires a massive electrical blast. Something yells. In fact, it yells when he does it again. We can soon hear something charging the exit, though we can't see it.

This is when we finally take down the first. Our warriors do some smackage and when the being falls it becomes visible. At first it's... well... a "Giant Dwarf" who then shrinks down to his normal sub-human size. The next one is subsequently taken out and we are concerned because we'd heard 3.

We rest outside, recoup, and go back in. Well, it looks like they were still in there, standing guard. Only this time, they aren't necessarily big. They're firing invisible crossbow bolts at us. Morley rushes in, thinking they're up on top of the 12ft wall inside the next chamber. However, misunderstanding that the walled segment has no real top on it, the giant using the wall for cover swats Morley for some knockback (more KB than damage really), but that gets us a general location. The team encroaches and with some trial and error manages to nail the giant. Also I think this where Flinnic discovered just how big a radius he could make on his attack "push"--hurting giants and PC's alike.

The next room has another partition wall in it. This time however, the Dwarves have shrunk! The mini-dwarves, still invisible, are firing shots at us while Holgarr searches the area by swatting at hexes in hope of hitting something. With further team damage they are eventually brought down. Some holes in the wall are located. Seems they shrink to come through those holes and then grow back to size in the room. Bet they have good treasure in there, if we could shrink down.

There's an exit hall which features several trap pits. The first one has a body in it, which when extracted seems to be the body of one of the preceding team. He's long dead and a bit mummified. So naturally we loot him. But we put him to rest outside and try to read a note he had with him. It mentions someone named Madreus. He's our likely villain.

Someone has invisible caltroped the other side of the pits when we come back through so again Holgarr the janitor goes to work and sweeps them away. We continue.

In the hallway we eventually come to pieces of metal inset to the floor (rails). Eventually that leads to the lair of the spiders. I mean, what's a good Dungeon without giants, dwarves, and spiders? The spiders were a pretty big pain themselves. They kept wrapping up PCs in webbing, knocking their DEX down to 0 and immobilizing them.

When at last the spiders fell we reached the room that featured a large furnace, piles of coal, and a metal cart. Oh... and two giants and the great oz behind a curtain.

Oz asked us a few questions, decided we were from the Valley, and sent his giants to slaughter us. Strobe-boy blinded them and I believe it was Holgarr that charged the curtain and cut the figure behind it into wood shavings; Seems it was a dummy. The voice was actually coming from the furnace. A figure therein tries to set the group on fire. Many are scorched and try to take cover and position themselves out of sight. An illusionary wall is put up over the fire, for a while. William goes down but is pulled to safety. The man in the fire goes down after a prolonged volley of fire vs. arrows, mental attacks, etc.

Seems the main villain of this room was one of our former villagers. The taint got to him.

ADDENDUM FROM MARK:

"The names you have been given so far:

  • Nigel Herzog: Leader of the group, likely an Esper (Clairsentient), Status: Unknown
  • Derek Cassel: Electrokinetic, Status: Dead at the bottom of a pit, now buried by PCs
  • Wellfast Larssen: Telekinetic (advanced Pyrokinetics), Status: Dead, slain by PCs, but found with Tainted Slug crawling out of ear...
  • Quarren del Fuego: Beautiful Biokinetic, Status: Unknown

According to Sources found (2 separate pieces of parchment): The four Valley inhabitants began exploring the events of God's Tear, Firestorm Peak, the increase in Taint, and the damage to Gel 27 years ago.

It seems that somewhere in the mountain, the Ancients created a "Vast Gate". This "Gate" is either still open or opens only during the celestial event. In order to close the Gate, 3 crystals are required.
PCs found a blue crystal on Wellfast's dead body.

In addition, another name was mentioned: Madreus (apparently not a member of the Valley Expedition). He is a "would-be Aberrant, Aberrant controller, or Alienist". Madreus may control the Vast Gate. In the parchment it read "The only way to end the threat is to kill Madreus and refocus the Gate to another location using the 3 Crystal Components".

Also "Insidious creatures lie deeper...."
